Unequip Gau of whatever he has on him and have him leap. When he comes back, cast Stop on him. Now cast Doom on him until he dies. When he dies, he'll just stand there, and you'll collect the reward from beating the enemies. You will get nothing for beating Gau. He can rejoin your party afterwards, thank goodness.
